Vegan Dagwood Dogs (Corn Dogs)

Posted on 12 February 202512 February 2025 By nikzane

Ingredients

  • 6 Veggie Delights Plant-Based Hot Dogs (or your preferred vegan hot dogs)
  • 1 ½ cups cornmeal (instead of all-purpose flour for more fibre)
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt (or less, depending on your taste)
  • 1 cup unsweetened plant-based milk (almond, soy, or oat – your choice)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (or avocado oil for heart-healthier fats)
  • 1 tsp mustard powder (optional, for tang)
  • A pinch of garlic powder, smoked paprika, or turmeric (optional, for extra flavor)
Optional Spicy Add-Ons:
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper or chili powder for heat
  • 1 tbsp sriracha or your favorite hot sauce, stirred into the batter
  • Fresh chopped jalapeños for extra crunch and heat (drain excess moisture before adding to the batter)

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Hot Dogs: Skewer each of the 6 Veggie Delights Plant-Based Hot Dogs (or your choice of vegan hot dogs) onto sticks. If they’re too long for your frying pot, feel free to cut them in half.
  2. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, baking powder, salt, and any optional seasonings like mustard powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, or turmeric.
  3. Add the Wet Ingredients: Gradually pour in the unsweetened plant-based milk and olive oil. Stir everything together until the batter is smooth and thick (it should resemble pancake batter). If it’s too thick, add a splash more milk to loosen it up.
  4. Preheat the Oil: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to about 350°F (175°C), or use an air fryer for a lighter option. If pan-frying, reduce the amount of oil and go with a non-stick pan.
  5. Coat the Hot Dogs: Dip each hot dog into the batter, making sure it’s evenly coated. Let any excess batter drip off.
  6. Fry the Dogs: Carefully drop the battered hot dogs into the hot oil (or air fry for a healthier option). Fry them for about 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally, until they’re golden brown and crispy all over.
  7. Drain and Serve: Remove from the oil and let the corn dogs drain on paper towels. Serve with your favorite dipping sauces or a side of fresh veggies.
